If you’ve ever cruised around Maplewood, you know it’s the “restaurant haven” of the Midwest. Should your palate be inclined toward a South of the Border meal, look no further than Casa Maya.
Does the name Casa Maya sounds familiar? It’s because for years the restaurant was called Cafe Maya. But 5 months ago the place was purchased by chef Juan Gutierrez, who hails from Mexico. He updated the name, though the original moniker is still shown on the window.
My grandson, Andrew, and I stopped for a quick lunch a few weeks ago. The place has a perfect pandemic setting with large interior space as well as street and back area for dining.

The first thing I noticed was the vast, multipage menu. I wanted enchiladas, but not the usual 3 that come on an order. Fortunately, they’re prepared for such as I.

There’s a lunch item with only 2 enchiladas—one beef; one cheese. I went for it and forfeited the beans for double rice.

Andrew settled on the quesadilla plate.

I barely had time to test the chips and scrumptious house-made salsa before the food arrived.
Climb Aboard the Taco Train
It was Taco Tuesday and the 99 cent Mexican specialty was featured on a blackboard outdoor. I regret not having the taco special, but I can only eat so much. Besides I’m an enchilada aficionado. But Taco Tuesday is on my menu card.
If you’re looking for a bargain along with good service and a trip down Mexico way, give this one a try.
Note: Our charming and chatty server pointed out that the new owner was into community service and in the habit of taking free meals to volunteers and nursing homes. I like that.
