I had a special treat this weekend. I got to eat food prepared by my oldest grandson and my youngest granddaughter. Let’s start with Austin, who celebrated his recent college graduation by hosting a buffet dinner for family and friends. He and his girl friend, Summer, sent a day shopping and cooking an assortment of dishes and sauces.
The menu included grilled ribs and wings, beet salad, cucumber-tomato-feta salad, Mexican street corn, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese made with several cheeses, including rosemary goat cheese. The beets and greens came from his backyard garden. I’m very impressed by Austin’s culinary skills and especially his adventuresome attitude toward cooking. His delight in serving good, wholesome food will bring him and others much pleasure in the years to come.

My granddaughter, who spent the weekend with me, is a budding cook. She loves to join in the messiness of a busy kitchen, even it means standing on a step stool to reach the counter. Here we make a simple cake that has only a few ingredients. It’s a recipe that works well for children.
What a delicious and memorable weekend it was!
