At Herbie’s in Clayton, this guys was the only server not wearing a mask. 🙂
Nowadays, scrupulous diners are on the lookout for pandemic-protected patios. One the closest to me is located at Herbie’s overlooking Maryland Avenue and Brentwood in Clayton. There was a light breeze when I was there at noon recently, giving the Covid cautious an even greater sense of protection.
The lunch menu is not extensive, but the offering is varied and tasty.

Besides spacious surroundings, customers are treated to a Ernest Tova sculpture, “Walking Jackman,” that adorns the corner.

On Another Corner, There’s C.J. Mugg’s
Not far away C.J. Mugg’s sports more outdoor dining space. On the day I ate there, I was with my friend, Jane, visiting from California. We had a leisurely, after-hours’ lunch on their patio. That is, we asked for outdoor seating at 1:15 rather than the busier noon hour.

C.J. Mugg’s exterior, showing part of the long L-shaped patio.

When I eyed the menu (which I often do on line before going to a restaurant), I found it was one of those with a number of selections that appealed to me.

I went with the cup of Creole Gumbo (below) and the small Chopped Thai BBQ Chicken.

Jane has a love affair with Mugg’s Cobb Salad that she’d enjoyed earlier in the week and had no trouble ordering again.
More about pretty, pandemic-protected patios yet to come. Stay tuned.
