“We Deliver!”
When I threw out the idea of depicting Captain Zucchini, as a superhero, delivering squash and championing green vegetable, my artist friend, Jamie Anderson, took up the challenge. (I might note, the art project was considerably less demanding for her than designing the Children’s Fountain at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion.)

Artist Jamie Anderson and I chat during a visit at the Governor’s Mansion last year.
A Vegetable Forward Kind of Guy
Captain Z is a be-goggled, cape-swirling matchmaker, who brings green edibles and people together for health and happiness. He hawks vegetables under the motto: “We Deliver.” (Note the use of the “royal We,” the majestic plural, that denotes his garden superiority.) Captain Z’s first “State of the Vegetable Garden,” (below) comes today from New York City.
“Let Food Be Thy Medicine”
A number of pharmacies in New York, particularly Brooklyn, now make it easier for low-income SNAP recipients to get healthier food.
By signing up for the Pharmacy to Farm program, adults customers with high blood pressure are eligible to receive $30-worth of Health Bucks monthly. The “food currency” is redeemable only for fresh fruits and vegetables.
The program is a win-win-win. It improves health among chronically ill patients, supports local farmers, and draws more vendors to under-served communities. More about the three-year old program that’s being expanded here.
