A tribute to the Chinese Barbecued Salad at Cardwel’s (now out of business).
I’m on a Mission!
I’m in search of the best vegetable salads in town. My favorite restaurant salad was the Chinese Barbecued Chicken once served at Cardwell’s. But the place closed several years back, forcing me to look elsewhere.
The Noteworthy Salad
You say, why is picking a new favorite so hard? There’s a lot of salads out there.
Well, there’s also a lot of so-so salads. Yes, some are worthy of their calling. But others should be tossed—literally. I want my salad memorable. I want it to have a Zen spirit. But, sadly, too many look like yard clipping unattractively adorned with a few veggies, and drowned in a bland dressing.
The closest I’ve found to my old favorite is at Charlie Gitto’s on The Hill. But, that is—as we say in the Ozarks—a “fer piece” to go.
The Quest Continues
I know there are many salads yet to be tasted and tested. Here are the ones I’ve found memorable so far. Take a look at these super vegetable salad—shown in no particular order.

The “Women’s Exchange salad “ is very good. I usually ask for the dressing on the side, but it is so good; they even sell it by the pint.
