OXO Grip containers
Inspiration
I was inspired by the kitchen guru, who said we should organize our kitchens by zones, preferably four areas: Prep, Cook, Clean, and Store. Other people’s systems don’t always work for me, but this one did. I turned first to the Store areas, which are generally the refrigerator/freezer/pantry portions of a kitchen.
Freezer Frenzy
It all started when I opened my freezer recently to insert some leftovers only to find there was standing room only in there. Something had to go before anymore could be added. As I shuffled the various shaped baggies and plastic containers, I unearthed some ancient treasures. I rotated a number of them to the top. The icy packages, that looked like a snow globe when shaken, I pitched.
The UFOs (Unidentified Freezer Objects), without labels or dates, also got the heave ho. In the end, I regained about a 1/3 of my freezer capacity. Whoopie!

Reorganizing My Freezer
Shortly after “The Purge,” I read what America’s Test Kitchen found to be the best freezer storage containers. Their A+ rating for Best Plastic Storage Container went to Rubbermaid Brilliance Food Storage Container (9.6 cups). It’s clear, lightweight, and BMT and stain free. The snug seal doesn’t leak even when turned upside down and shaken.
For those squeamish about storing in plastic, the Test Kitchen bestowed their A+ rating on Oxo Good Grip (8 cup) Smart Seal Rectangle Container. It’s glass with a plastic, airtight, and leak-proof lid.

OXO Good Grip Smart Seal Rectangle Containers are suitable for freezer or fridge.
Housing leftovers and freezer items safely and conveniently takes a bit of doing, but it increases their survival rate and flavor appreciably. Besides being available on line, you can find these containers locally at Target, Home Depot, The Container Store, and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
I’m so excited about the prospect of getting my freezer organized, that I might just turn to the kitchen cabinets next. Especially the Prep and Cook zones.
Update: Sadly, I’ve already filled the extras space I regained in the freezer. But this time with prettier, well-marked containers.
