If you’re cruising Delmar and get a yen for some fresh sushi look no farther than Blue Ocean Sushi. The illustrated menu helps you navigate their many choices, ranging from the traditional edamame and tempura to their more exotic offerings. One such gem is a flaming dish delivered on a foil-shaped dragon and entitled Take a Chance—and I strongly suggest that you do.
The bite-size chunks of seafood and rolls of raw fish and vegetables feel primal, clean and healthy on the palate. Not only do I love eating sushi, I enjoy photographing it, though I have to be quick to click before prodding chopsticks demolish the symmetry of the presentation.
The interior design of Blue Ocean is a bit befuddling to those of a certain age. The restaurant has bypassed the typical Asian décor of so many sushi shops and livened their walls with funky Japanese cartoon characters. Ten-year-olds will recognize them, while the rest of us just smile in wonder.
Blue Ocean Sushi, 6335 Delmar in the Loop. Open: Everyday. Lunch: 11a-4p; Dinner: 4p-10p.
