I get to Columbia several times a year, the most significant trip being for the presentation of the Gov. Mel Carnahan Public Service Award presented by UMC’s Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs. The event takes place on, or near, Mel’s birthday each year.
The 2018 recipient was Joseph P. Bednar, Jr, chair of Spencer Fane’s government relations practice in Jefferson City, former legal counsel for three governors and assistant prosecuting attorney for Jackson County. Congratulations to Joe and his family shown below.

The Booch Burger Finale
I couldn’t leave Columbia without a Booch Burger at the old watering hole on 9th street. When I lived in Columbia in the 50’s, women weren’t allowed in the hamburger joint/pool hall. I have a friend who says her mother frequently sent her to Booches to tell her brother to come home (before cell phones). She had to stand outside and make hand motions or ask some male to fetch him from the pool tables. All that’s changed, but the abbreviated menu remains, as does the cash only policy.
