Name That Plant!
My daughter sent me this photo during her visit to California. It was labeled: “Name That Plant!” Well, it was quite lovely, but for the life of me, I had no idea what it was. Probably something exotic they grow on the Left Coast. Maybe a cactus. I never imaged that it would be edible. So I wrote back confessing my ignorance. Minutes later I got a one word reply: Artichoke!
I went on Google Images and sure enough there it was just like the photos she’d sent. So I thought I’d post this picture in case you stumble upon such a plant on a deserted island and need something to eat.
Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Nutritionist Jonny Bowden says artichokes are kind of like the lobster of the vegetable community, you have to really work to get at the good parts. The part that’s called the “heart” is technically the bottom of the plant and it takes some digging to get there.
I’ve reached the limits of my knowledge of artichokes. You’re on your own.
