My farm kitchen is 15-years old, but I’m still lovin’ it despite the 2019 kitchen trends.
I’ve decorated a few kitchens in my day. No two ever alike. It depended on my mood. At times I wanted a cozy country look and other times I preferred something more modern with Asian touches. At the moment, I’m not in the mood to make any major changes.
But that didn’t stop me from taking a look at the trends in kitchen decorating for 2019. According to the style gurus at Houzz, Troulia, Etsy, and BH&G some looks are out; others are in. Some are trending downward while others are on their way to becoming classics. Here’s what I found . . . .
Open Shelving (Both In and Out)

For instance, open shelving has gone bye-bye, according to Etsy. They say that 2019 will be the year of “being real” and that means those open shelves collecting grime and clutter need to go behind closed doors.
Other decorators say, hold on, moderation is key here. I agree. I like the open look if you can spare the upper cabinets. Open shelves work best if you have a pantry—which I sorely regret, I do not.
All White Kitchen (Out . . . well, almost)
Blush pink kitchen cabinets are on the trending list for 2019.
The all-white kitchen has become a classic, but one that’s getting a bit ho-hum. Decorators foresee an infusion of “moody hues,” such as navy, black, and hunter green.
Pink has been introduced as the new neutral for kitchen cabinets. Not a bright circus candy pink, mind you, but a soft blush. Hmm. . . it sounds more like the palette for a new line of lip gloss. I’m not going along with this one. I’m staying with my country, antique yellow cabinets, that bring a sunny feeling to the kitchen.
Expanded Stove Back Splash (In)

Sadly, this 2019 fad won’t work for me. The expanded back splash is lovely in magazines, but I don’t have any extra wall space to devote to tile. Scratch this one.
Bench Seating (In)
But I’m excited by the trend toward bench seating in the kitchen, that includes a lift top for storage. I’ve had this at one end of my dining area for years. I’m glad to see, that after all this time, bench seating has finally become groovy.
More Trendy Stuff
- Voice-controlled fixtures and appliances are already on the market—-Kohler, JennAir, and Dacor. (Okay, as long as they don’t talk back.)
- Matte Black finish for hardware, faucets, and appliances. (With a large, black sink in my condo, I’m ready to meet the New Year!)
- A minimalist look, especially when it comes to cabinet handles, some no more than cut out holes. (Ouch!)
- Suspended lighting. (Got this)
- Indoor herb garden. (I wish.)
- Gold and copper accents in handles and faucets (Why not?)
- Open layout that blends living spaces. (Check)
- Extra-deep drawers by the range for storage of pots and pans. (YES!)
- Big, practical, single bowl sink (Got it; love it)
My Predictions
Since the 2019 trends are already in the making, I’m going out on a limb here to predict what to expect in 2020. That will be a “visionary” year, as the number implies. Cabinets will be personalized to the color of the owner’s eye shade and pulls will be shaped like arched brows. Yes, all eyes will be on the kitchen. We’ll see . . . .

But for now, I’m good with what I’ve got. Kitchen makeovers are costly, so I’m glad that nothing I’ve read has turned my head. What I really need is more counter space. But I’ve never been satisfied with my amount of work space.
I suspect that at some point in the future, the kitchen wizards will announce that it’s trendy to have less counter space. When that happens, I’ll have the most fashionable kitchen in town. 🙂
