Hunkered down.
I’m taking the advice of Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He said we all need to “hunker down” significantly more. For now, I’ve retreated to the farm, where my “social distancing” can be measured in miles.
When I arrived I was greeted by clusters of perky, yellow daffodils—-a prelude to spring, when earth comes to life again and viruses retreat. By day two, I was getting more into the leisurely pace of cloistered living. I spent hours by my cozy fireplace as flames licked the logs cut last year during safer, more carefree times.
Drink Up
I hydrate like Doc Fauci suggested. He said we should drink water more frequently, especially warm drinks such as teas. There was no mention of wine, but I sip an occasional rose’ to heighten my spirits until the sun shines again.
JC made a splendid tuna casserole, though it took two calls to his mother to get it just right.
Food in this “country inn” has been 5 star so far. Beef Empanadas found in the bottom of the freezer made a splendid meal on the day of our arrival. Robin made some split pea soup and Italian socca bread. She’s been able to reinvigorated a sour dough starter so more bread is on the way. Lasagna tops tonight’s menu. Aggh . . . I fear there are pounds to be gained while in “exile.”
What To Do in Confinement
As to entertainment, the reception here is not good for podcasts, so I’ve turned to Netflix for Grace and Frankie, Chef’s Table, and Derry Girls.” I even took in some reruns of Keeping Up Appearances and a few old Seinfeld shows. (I could relate more readily to the segment on Bubble Boy this time.)

Before my brain softens, I’m thinking of doing something significant like reading a Tolstoy novel. Years from now, when my grandchildren ask, “Grandma, what did you do during the Great Pandemic of 2020?” I can say I followed the advice of Dr. Fauci and hunkered down. I can say I read War and Peace, ate lasagna, and drank rose‘ by the fire.”
