Blueberries can be costly even when they’re in season. That’s why the chance to pick your own can make for a worthwhile family outing. I try to eat a handful of blueberries everyday, because it’s one of the healthiest of fruits and they’re pretty doggone delicious as well. The little blue nuggets are a powerhouse of antioxidants with great potential benefits for the nervous system, brain health, and memory improvement.

While at the farm this weekend we drove out to Brandywine Blueberry Farm six miles south of Rolla. We arrived a little after 8 a.m. There’s not many things that get me out and about at that hour of the morning, but fresh picked blueberries is one of them.
The self-pick farm has been around since the early 80s, but for the past 4 years it has been owned and operated by Dr. Larry Marti and his family. What a surprise it was to see our old friend Larry at the entrance welcoming customers to the site. No pesticides or herbicides are used on the plants that are primarily Bluecrop and Blueray varieties. Picking is done between 7a and 11a, Tuesdays and Saturdays until the supply is gone.

That evening we had a Peach Blueberry Cobbler with homemade ice cream. I call it “counter-made ice cream” because we used an electric counter top freezer rather than our old White Mountain freezer that takes a lot more effort. Either way, it’s good summertime eating.
