I join John Long and Mary McFarland for lunch at Russell’s on Macklind. Good friends, good food, good times!
I love it when young people invite me to lunch. Especially those I’ve known since they were kids. This week was such a time. John Long and Mary McFarland (from Rolla, but living and working in St. Louis), took me to Russell’s on Macklind. Their homes are not far from the charming cafe in the Southhampton neighborhood. Every neighborhood should be so fortunate as to have a cafe/bakery enlivening a corner with fine food, bakery goods and hot coffee.

As we caught up with life in Rolla and St. Louis, I chowed down on a B.L.A.T. (bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato). The soup du jour was a chicken pot pie soup—new to me, but hearty and flavorful.

Next Stop: The Hill

Linzer Valentine cookie
We passed up dessert, because John had brought Mary and I each a large, home-baked Linzer (a sandwich cookie with a sweet-tart filling). Besides, I had more stops in mind over on The Hill.
I needed some ditali noodles for the minestrone I’m making for the weekend. They’re stubby, tubular noodles and the woman, who helped me find them at Di Gregorio’s grocery agreed with my selection, saying they were perfect for soup. I bought a good supply since it appears we’re going to be having soup weather for sometime to come.
No Hill visit is complete for me without a stop at Skiff International to see what owner and flamboyant designer, Nina Ganci, is creating for the fashion world.
Then a stop next door at Herbaria to see what new soap Ken Gilberg was cooking up. Sure enough, I came away with a new variety—Tuitty-Fruity, with a mild scent just right for a guest bath room.
What a delightful day!
