When Russ went down to south Missouri last weekend, he brought back some tomatoes and peaches from Campbell—considered the Peach Tree Capital of Missouri. This time of the year, (late July or so), the freestone peaches start to come in. Compared to the cling stones, they’re easier to peel, slice and eat and better for pie baking. I think they’re sweeter and juicier, too.
If you’re thinking of driving to the Bootheel to fetch you some tree-ripened, velvety-skinned peaches, there are roadside stands before you get that far. But I’ve heard they’re sold at Dierbergs, too, but I’ve not check that out.
