Governor and Mrs. Jay Nixon hosted the annual meeting of the Academy of Squires for lunch at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion on Friday. The group started by Gov. James Blair in 1960 is made up of 100 living Missourians deemed to have made significant contributions to their community, state and nation.
The group welcomed three new inductees: Chief Justice Patricia Breckenridge; golf coach and sports-hall-of-famer Ellen Port; and Dr. Donald Suggs, publisher of the St. Louis American.
Read a squib on each of the 9 new members, that included John Goodman and Ozzie Smith. Among the first class of Squires in 1960 were Harry Truman, Thomas Hart Benton and Stan Musial.
