As you can see, my BLT is long on the T.
In the film Princess Bride, Miracle Max declares “true love is the greatest thing in the world. Except for a nice MLT, a mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They’re so perky, I love that.”
Well, I had no mutton on hand, so I went with bacon and the traditional lettuce and tomato. But the tomatoes were garden fresh, the mayo from Duke’s, and the lettuce came from the back of my refrigerator bin.
Ahh. . . but the Bread!
I came upon a half-loaf size of marble rye at Straub’s bakery last week. It was gorgeous! When I see marble rye I always think of the bakery incident in Jerry Seinfeld’s show, where he’s unable to convince the elderly woman, who buys the last marble rye, to sell it to him for more than she paid. When she refuses, he snatches it away and runs off.
I’ve never made a BLT on marble rye before, but it was quite rewarding, both in taste and television memories.
A BLT Bye-Bye
Let it be know, however, that I’m not a year-round BLT enthusiast. I only eat the sandwich in the summer, when the ingredients can be freshly acquired. As the tomatoes get sparse in the coming weeks, so will my BLTs, which is probably just as well. I’ll go back to eating salad and soup for lunch and yearning for a short winter and long growing season next year.
