Jean Carnahan and Judy Dean during clown school years ago.
In the 80s, I went to clown school with my friend Judy Dean. We mustered enough nerve to perform a few times, mostly for church events. This week I went to Rolla to attend a meeting of a women’s club that I belonged to when I lived in Phelps County. It was great to see old friends, especially my clowning buddy. Judy will be 90 this year, but she’s as free-spirited and fun-loving as ever.

The meeting was at the home of Kaye Steinmetz. She’s a former state legislator from St. Louis County, who returned to her hometown of Rolla after retirement. Kaye greeted the 30-some members and guests with an “aloha” and a colorful lei.
Though it was damp and dreary outside, the program committee brightened the day with a delightful, Hawaiian-themed lunch, that included island meatballs and appetizers, pulled pork, chicken salad, Hawaiian coleslaw, fruit skewers, peach iced tea, and rainbow sherbet cake.

Fruit skewers are a healthy, bright addition to any menu.

Colorful table decorations and leis helped simulate an island atmosphere for members and guests.
