I had a hankering for a good, homemade pea soup this week. As I chopped the vegetables, it occurred to me that as a kid, I often ate Campbell’s Pea Soup (Tomato Soup or Chicken Noodle) for a fast lunch.
When I poked around the Internet, I found some pretty funny ads for the soups I enjoyed in the 40s and 50s.
Here’s your laugh for the day . . .
Campbell Soup Saves the Day

“Wouldn’t I be silly to make it myself? Go to all that bother, when Campbell’s is so homey and nourishing? Not me!” (Source: Etsy)

“What’s cookin,’ good lookin’?” asks hubby. The delighted homemaker responds: “When my husband greet me like that, I know he’s brought home his appetite—and what a help to have good, hot soup ready.” Hmm. . . I’m thinking this guy has more on his mind than a bowl of porridge. (Source: Pinterest)
Other Campbell selling points included such reminders as:
- “Soup adds sunshine to the meal.”
- “Pea soup with it’s June-like goodness is perfect for a blustery day.”
- “It’s the kind of vegetable soup I’d be proud to make myself.”
- “I just couldn’t keep house without Campbell’s soups.”
Time Marches On

The new soup look
Mama didn’t care for the new convenience products that came along during the post-war era. When neighbors were flocking to Spam and Tang and TV dinners, Mama banned them from the premises.
The one exception was Campbell’s soups. Their chicken soup was the old standby for anyone suffering from an upset stomach or head cold. Those requiring home treatment or a quick lunch benefited from its warm, brothiness.
I don’t think Mama would’ve found these Campbell Soup ads nearly as amusing as I think they are. Read them all the way through; they’re very funny.
