The Ambiance of Akar
The funky Botero statue can be seen directly across form Akar. The chubby man on chubby horse marks the entry onto Wydown, where a handful of stunning restaurants await the adventuresome. Now that Bernie has expanded into adjoining space, his seating has multiplied both inside and on the charming patio.
The new digs, painted in a gray monotone, feature arches shaped by subtle overhead lighting. The restaurant’s cozy, relaxed feel is one of the most appealing I’ve seen in St. Louis.
Robin, JC, Lucy, and I sat in the window with a full view of the Botero statue. The playful sculpture is a prelude to the artistry that Akar brings to the St. Louis area.
Bernie hails from Malaysia, but thankfully brought his native culinary fare with him. He’s excited about the success of his expanded area and the chance to cook for more customers. I reminded him of the time he cooked in Robin’s kitchen for us many years ago. We got a full report on his beloved, dog Ruby. When I asked if Ruby was bi-lingual, he responded that the clever pooch could understand three languages, including a Malaysian dialect.
Be sure to watch the film at Akar’s website. It’s a fun interview with Bernie that’s definitely worth viewing before eating there.
