Seedz sounds like the name of a lawn and garden shop. But the tiny (700 sq. ft) vegan cafe, that opened five years ago, serves what co-owners Monty Gralnick and Clara Schloss call “nutrient-dense food.”

While the space is petite, the menu is surprisingly grande and includes juices, smoothies, soups, salads, entrees and desserts. Dishes are prepared with only coconut or olive oil and soy is used sparingly.

Cyndy stopped at the side street cafe in Demun recently for a carry out meal for our working lunch. I ordered the Veggie Burger and salad with the Incredible smoothie. Cyndy went with the Special of the Day: Raw Thai Lettuce Wrap with raw walnut “meat,” peanut sauce, green onions, carrots and sprouts. My veggie burger was made with brown rice and garbanzo beans, much like what I make at  home. All was topped with cheesy slaw, guacamole, BBQ sauce, sprouts, lettuce and tomato.

 

So What is Vegan?

Now I’m a confirmed carnivore, though I eat far less meat than I once did. But I enjoy the flavor and textures of an occasional vegan meal. Vegans typically exclude meat, eggs and dairy from their diet along with some processed foods and wines. Though the vegan lifestyle has health and environmental benefits, only 2% of Americans identify as such.

Vegan restaurants often refer to their fare as “plant-based.” This apparently has more appeal to the 98%, who eat meat regularly, but find such little cafes as Seedz to offer a light and tasty alternative.

The quality is high at Seedz, but beware, so are some of the prices. Even so, if you’re in the mood for a tasty and healthy meal in a cozy, affable setting on a quiet, tree-lined street, it’s worth the price.
