A Time to Sow
The Good Book says “there’s a time to sow and a time to reap.” Well, this is definitely the time to sow—though my reaping has always been a little dicey. Holidays too often turn into workdays at the farm, because there’s always family and friends around. Most are willing—or can be induced—to lend a hand.
Lucy, my plant analyst, is intent on making my new rock garden as lovely as her own. I’m thrilled with that! Her husband, Robert, a geology professor, is putting down the flagstone that intersects the space. He’s greatly over-qualified for the task, but he gets to play with rocks and that’s what geology is all about. I now know the subtle difference between flagstone and sandstone.

Plants grow for Lucy—or else! But four-footed nibblers are hard to keep at bay. The deer have already confiscated one of my favorite pink tomatoes. The re-plant got a protective guard of chicken wire.

First, Robert and JC carved out the pathway. After filling the space with rocks, pea gravel, and sand, Robert and Robin designed the puzzle pieces to form the walk. I overheard one deer say to the others, “Look, guys! They’re building us a walkway!” 🙂

Robin gave me a fig tree for Mother’s Day. I’ve lost two previous ones. Here she tenderly plants and blesses the seedling with it’s two healthy leaves.

Flagstone is a heavy lift. Look for an update on the rock garden as it progresses.
