A “garden” of goodies for the pickin’
Fruit of the Land
It seems like I’m living off fruits and vegetables these days. (I even had a Beet Reuben sandwich the other day—though I don’t recommend it. Reubens weren’t meant to be over-vegetized.)
The Hunt Is On
In my quest for home produce, I made a run to the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market located across from the train depot. The attractive showcase for plants and produce comes with handy parking, friendly service, and beautiful fruits and vegetables. What’s more they carry one of my favorite-most condiments: Million Dollar Pickles.

There so much good out there from the home gardens, orchards, and farmers’ markets. So scarf those veggies; down that fruit; and share your abundance.

In the summer, I become a Hunter-Gatherer of vegetables and fruits.

Entrance to the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market

I once saw a sign at a roadside market that read: “Don’t pinch the peaches; pinch the watermelon.” Here I “pinch” the melons, or, at least, examine the stem.

Are you tired of seeing the same fruits in your refrigerator bin? Try a pluot. It’s a cross between a plum and an apricot, that produces a colorful, sweet and juicy treat.

My friend, Lucy, brought me some fresh peaches from the orchards of Campbell, MO. The juice ran across my face and down my arms the way a sweet, ripe peach should do. Back when my family was campaigning the state, we’d always bring home peaches from Campbell in South Missouri. In recent years, Cyndy brings me peaches from The Peach Tree Farm in Boonville.

Strawberry Shortcake, always a luscious, summer dessert

My nephew, Bobby and wife Peggy, share their homegrown tomatoes each year.

One evening I ate just these six, fresh vegetables for dinner. Very satisfying.

I can eat these chunks like a bowl of M&Ms. There are virtually no seeds.
