The Impulse Shopper
I ambled into Trader Joe’s the other day to get some of their Mandarin Orange Chicken. The chunky, crunchy packets of frozen chicken are perfect for the solo diner. But Trader Joe has a way of drawing you into their many unique foods, so I always do a bit of impulse shopping while I’m there.
One of the first things I came upon was the Tuscan-Style Extra Sweet Cantaloupes. The green grooves on the exterior make them easy to identify. The magnificent melon is marketed by Dulcinea and available in most supermarkets during the spring and summer months. Each melon gets the Dulcinea label with the funky sunshine logo.
Dulcinea also offer a variety of mini-seedless watermelons, that fit nicely into your grocery cart and refrigerator. The roundish melons are perfect for making a fruit basket. To further enhance your melon enjoyment, Dulcinea offers an array of recipes for appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts, and beverages on their website.

Carving a mini watermelons basket.

What a wonderful excuse to use one of my mother’s old pressed-glass bowls.

Bonus Photo: Back in the 60’s when I took up oil painting, I especially enjoyed doing still life scenes featuring fruit. This is one Inspired by a picture I found in an art course book.
More Impulse Buying
I might also mention, that while I was at Trader Joe’s, I bumped into Brooklyn Babka—no, that’s not the leader of a New York street gang. It’s a sweet bread. One described as a cross between yeast bread and a croissant, all marbled and the top sprinkled with chocolate chips.
The loaf was okay, though I wasn’t keen on the texture. Besides, the Babka had nearly 40 ingredients, which is a couple dozen more than I like in baked items.
But I am enjoying my melon and Mandarin chunks and looking forward to more discoveries at Trader Joe’s.
