All of us likely have a drawer, or two, in our kitchen, that could stand reorganizing. The one shown above is in the island of my farm kitchen. For years we’ve tossed everything from cork screws to graters to ice cream scoops in the spacious opening. It was easy to put things away (except when a bulky piece prevented closure), but it took a bit of scavenging to find them again.
My daughter-in-law, Lisa offered a fix. If I’d send her the measurements of the drawer, she’d get plastic dividers and organize all the kitchen tools. I was ecstatic! This was a task I felt emotionally unfit to tackle. There were just too many old kitchen gadgets with fond memories, but lost usefulness.
As it turned out, Lisa even labeled the space where items should go. Above is the photo I took of the makeover. I wish I had a “before” to go with this “after,” so you could see the difference.
In the course of reclaiming the space, she uncovered a half dozen spatulas, five cork screws, and enough vegetable scrapers to equip a restaurant kitchen. She bravely relocated some items, kept just the essentials, and put the leftovers in a shoebox.
Organized! But Can We Keep It That Way?
Lisa also rearranged the utensil drawer, causing JC and I to get into a heated discussion of just where a pair of tongs should go. Apparently, space organization is open to interpretation.
Now when searching for a kitchen tool, I pause and ponder. Opening the drawer is less like playing a game of hide and seek. It’s now more like working a jigsaw puzzle. I have to determine where the “pieces” fit. Actually, I’m adapting to the new arrangement more easily than I thought.
