The Gift of a Cool, Rainy Spring
Mainly, morels need a lot of water to produce prolifically. According to Missouri mycologists, this could be an “epic” season for those who stalk the wild fungi. April is peak hunting season for morels, but with the cool, wet spring we can expect them in early May as well.

Where to Look for Morels
If you’re tramping in the woods, look for a south-facing slope open to sunshine. Morels hang out around certain trees, such as elm, ash, poplar and apple trees—either growing under them or on them. Ground that has been burnt or flooded is also perfect to explore. Good luck! Oh, yes, spray for ticks. The little creepy critters are out there already.
