My pathetic magnolia tree under 8-inches of snow!
Day One in My “Fabricated Alpine Village”
I’m trying to stave off cabin fever as best I can—it’s just Day 1, for heaven’s sake! Even so, I’m putzing around the condo in my sweats, no makeup, starring into the refrigerator every ten minutes to make sure it’s still well stocked. I’ve alphabetized my spices and ironed the dish towels. What’s more, I’ve drafted enough blog posts to get me through Valentine’s Day. Happily, family and friends send me updates on what’s going on in our local snow globe.
Winter Wonderland

Robin, Addie, Coco and Harper sledding on Art Hill in Forest Park today.
From Jeff City, a friend sent photos of her husband decked out to clear the driveway with his manual snowplow—aka a shovel. I responded with words of encouragement. Robin went for a run this morning and reported there was about 8″ of the fluffy stuff covering Forest Park. Cyndy documented even more snow in Columbia—sixteen powdery inches!

“Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Hmm. . . maybe knee-deep snow? No mail today, Cyndy.

“Bree, I’m thinking we took the wrong turn at that last intersection.” Cyndy and Joe’s Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers seem mesmerized by the maze of snow in their backyard.
On to Day Two
Tomorrow I’ll be even more bored—but braver. I plan to meet up for lunch with some old friends from Philly, who are flying through St. Louis. I’ve already pulled out my calf-length, goose-down coat, that makes me look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy.
In the pocket, I have a cashmere cap made from the chin hairs of Himalayan goats raised at 15,000 feet above sea level. (I think that’s what it said in the catalog.) Then there’s my fur-lined boots with the plaid ankle tops, that I got on sale at Famous Barr fifteen years ago and reserved for inclement weather. I’m covered!!!
Staying Warm and Content

Stir Fried Rice
To lessen my anxiety, I made a stir fry of the many vegetables taking up space in my refrigerator. I used my Stir-Fry Anything recipe, because it’s flexible enough to incorporate what you have on hand. Just be sure to use cooked, cold rice. If you need to get it cold quickly, set the pot outdoors on a table that’s covered with snow.
