I drive up and down Hanley a lot, but sometime I just miss the forest for the trees (or the trees for the forest. . . whatever). I’ve been missing Twin Oak, until a couple of friends suggested we go there for lunch this week. At the entrance, standing next to the wood-burnt sign, was a friendly gentleman with a handful of menus.

“Is this restaurant a chain or is it locally owned?” I asked.
“My sons and I own the place,” he said proudly, “and we’ve been here more than three years now.”
As it turned out I had just met Bill “Freddy” Friedrich, who owns and operates the pizza/barbecue restaurant along with his twin sons, Curt and Casey.

Appetizers, soups, salads, barbecue, pizzas, and desserts are on this mouthwatering menu, that’s designed to work for any taste or appetite.
The first thing you notice walking pass the tables is the size of the portions on the plates. Two of us took our server’s suggestion and split a salad and pizza, which was enough for the third person at the table to sample. Later the three of us split a Deep Dish Dee-Lish, a warm, chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. Again, the size was just right.
This is a place that feeds you amply and well. If you want to give them a try, you might start with the real bargin: their Seven Day-a-Week Happy Hour from 3p. to 5p., when Twin Oak serves half-price pizza and half-price beer! Now that’s a deal that’s hard to beat.

The day’s special, Smoked Turkey Soup, was a splendid complement to the chilly day.

The Deep Dish Dee-Lish is a superb Toll House Chocolate Chip cookie, that’s cooked in a ramekin in the wood-fired oven and served with ice cream.
