What better way to get into the holiday spirit than hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree. Most of my ornaments of a lifetime are packed away, but it’s fun to help decorate Tom and Lisa’s tree and have an excuse to act goofy—as if I needed one.
This past weekend, while I was playing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the serious holiday work was proceeding in Lisa’s kitchen. My daughter-in-law was baking Spritz cookies like generations of cooks have done at this time of the year. She followed the recipe in a faded booklet that came with the old Mirro Cookie Pastry Press. Helpful handwritten notes were added by an earlier cook.
Three generations in the kitchen added to the intensity of cookie decorating. And the memories.
My granddaughter and I “detailed” the tree-shaped cookies with colorful sprinkles. Yumm. . .with cookies in the oven, the smells of Christmas filled the air.
