My younger grandson, Andrew, will turn 21 on the 21st. We celebrated early, while he was home from Mizzou for the weekend. His restaurant of choice was Broadway Oyster Bar in downtown St. Louis. I’ve only been there in the summer, when it’s pleasant to eat outside. The night we were there it was chilly and I wasn’t prepared. No matter, because the food warms your innards and the funky décor channels Bourbon Street.
The food and atmosphere are bold, authentic and memorable. I’ve never tasted anything quite like the Alligator Sausage and Shrimp Cheesecake appetizer. It alone was worth the trip. The Jambalaya and Fish Taco combo was as good as I’ve had in NOLA. I nibbled on the Gumbo, Oysters, and Crab Legs from nearby plates and all were in the best Cajun tradition.
I had to pass on the esteemed Bread Pudding since we were having Red Velvet birthday cake from La Patisserie Chouquette later in the evening. The texture of their cakes is heavenly and the icing creamy without being overly sweet. Good choice, Andrew. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
