Well, not exactly reading it–the book’s 1,044-pages long and weighs a ton. I’m perusing it. Mark Bittman’s best-selling, award-wining cookbook has over 2,000 recipes and more than half can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. The New York Times food guru displays his folksy manner with tantalizing sidebars and his approach to labeling and organizing recipes also makes for easy searches. My only complaint is with the girth of the volume that measures 8.5″ x 9.5″ x 2.5” and weighs more than five pounds. Still, I wouldn’t be without it. (Amazon, $20.33)
Update: Good news, friends and foodies, there’s an alternative. An app is available for $9.99 for both iPhone and iPad or $4.99 for iPhone only. The limited version of only 100 recipes is free. Like Mark Bittman himself the app is straightforward and easy. The left side of the screen lists Most Popular, Hot Items, Kitchen Basics, and Browse Recipes, each heading with subsections. There are drawing of various steps in the preparation process and notepad, grocery list, timer, print, email, Twitter, and Facebook features. Sadly, for the visually impaired, there is no pinch and squeeze feature that would enhance the type size, but other than that it’s a winner.
