If so, you might want to consider The Social Affair at the Station ,where you can cater an event or take home a quick, nourishing and well-prepared meal provided by co-owner and chef Kelly Spencer.
The Station is just that—an historic filling station lovingly transformed, giving the space the feeling of an old country store. Even the whimsical restroom looks like it might have been decorated by Martha Stewart. Kelly greets her customer with a smile warm enough to light the kitchen’s gas burners. The native of Birmingham, Alabama, has a degree in the culinary arts and says she’s always had a “passion” for good food.
Kelly displays her expertise with cocktail parties, cooking classes, and catered corporate and private events. A recent evening at The Station was dubbed “Put a Little South in Your Mouth” and her Monday Supper Club features home-style meals you can pick up between 4p. and 7p. She is especially adept at turning traditional large plate foods into individual bite-size food for cocktail parties and special events.
The glass door refrigerator is prominently displayed and offers walk-in customers an array of her most popular items produced in the adjoining kitchen, a space that has a counter big enough to double as a dance floor. I exaggerate, but the counter provides seating for twenty and would be the envy of any serious cook.
The day I was there, Kelly offered a number of simple, but appealing carry-out dishes, including Dixie Pimento Cheese, Chicken Salad; Smoked Salmon Dip; Tomato-Cucumber Salad, and Macaroni and Cheese, which Kelly says is bought for children, but eaten by adults.
I got the Bourbon and Bacon Jam in a small Mason jar as a gift for a friend and took home a small dish of the well-seasoned Cold Noodle Salad. Monday Supper Club selections for September include Chicken Casserole, Smoked Chicken Enchiladas with Spanish Rice; Eggplant and Goat Cheese Lasagna, and Pot Roast with the trimmings.
Her appetizers and side dishes are also available at the RISE Coffee House in the Grove. Check her website to see what’s cooking in Kelly’s kitchen.
